Do you know your Amazing Neighbors?

On any given day in our newspapers, you can read a story about someone noteworthy. These are people whom you know by their reputation — good, bad, or otherwise. A politician, a professional athlete, a musician. These are people who get loads of attention from admirers and detractors alike.

Sometimes these people work especially hard to cultivate their public persona. Sometimes, they have long since shed this mortal coil. But today, we’re shining our spotlight on the little guy.

The wonderful people in our communities who never get the recognition for the work they do, but soldier on anyway, unnoticed by most of us. Who needs Hollywood’s glitz and glamour when we’ve got a treasure trove of heartwarming, inspiring, and fun stories right at our doorstep?

Some of the people honored in this year’s Amazing Neighbor section have worked to improve the lives of their neighbors on a grand scale, while others were recognized for smaller acts of kindness.

Today, we’re profiling people like Ray Pokorny in Jefferson County, who has been supporting his community with a seemingly endless number of projects. For him, helping is “just what you do.” Or Nancy Chapin, who has worked at the Hawthorne Street Fair for 32 years.

Did I mention that she’s going to be 84 years old this year? She’s been a supporter of Portland neighborhoods for decades. And don’t forget about Daniel Roberts, who started a podcast in Newberg to highlight acts of goodwill in his town, at a time when national headlines have been critical. Heroism comes in all shapes, sizes, and shades of normal. Our goal?

To make you see your neighbor, your colleague, and maybe even yourself, in a whole new light.

Regardless of their contributions, they may not ever make the front page of a grocery store magazine, which is why we, here at Pamplin Media Group, and our supporting partners are proud to share their stories with you. We’re here to celebrate the real MVPs of our world — the people you won’t find on a red carpet, but who deserve a standing ovation nonetheless. These, truly, are our Amazing Neighbors.
